Limbaceramics Decal Workshop: Ceramic Storytelling
Transforming plain ceramics into personal artworks. No prior experience needed!
Our Unique Ethos: Canvases That Carry Stories
At Limbaceramics, we believe ceramics are more than functional objects they are canvases that carry stories and memories. Our workshop infuses the craft with a philosophy of mindfulness, community, and sustainable practice.
What Are Ceramic Decals?
Colored patterns or images printed on specialized paper, transferred onto a glazed ceramic surface. They fuse into the glaze during a low-temperature firing, creating a durable, hand-painted look accessible to all.
Unlock Creative Expression
Unlike complex hand-painting, decals allow artists to add intricate, detailed designs easily. They encourage experimentation and self-expression, combining the joy of collage with the tactile satisfaction of clay.
A Mindful & Social Experience
The process requires patience, sharpening creative focus. It’s a communal space to share ideas and celebrate each other's work, finding a sense of belonging in Dubai's local arts community.
A Brief History of Decal Art in Ceramics
19th Century
Industrial Origins. Manufacturers used decals for mass-produced tableware (floral motifs, logos), seeking efficient decoration methods.
1970s–1980s
Studio Adaptation. Ceramicists experimented with screen-printed transfers, combining photographic imagery with clay bodies, democratizing intricate decoration.
Contemporary Practice
Fine Art & Versatility. Independent studios use custom transfers (digital art, drawings) in full ceramic color, metallic lusters, and specialized finishes.
The Decal Process: A Four-Step Guide
Preparation & Soaking
The piece must be glaze-fired and cooled. Trim the decal and soak it in water (30–60 seconds) until the printed layer begins to slide away from its backing paper.
Positioning
Moisten the glazed surface. Carefully slide the decal from the backing paper onto the ceramic surface. Handle gently to allow for initial repositioning.
Smoothing & Drying
Use a damp sponge or soft brush to press out air bubbles and excess water. Blot the surface dry. Prick any remaining air pockets with a pin and smooth.
Low-Temperature Refiring
Fire the piece at a low temperature (approx. Cone 015 / 1450 °F). This fuses the pigments into the glaze, making the decal durable and permanent.
Why Decal Workshops?
Unlike mass‑produced ceramics, workshop settings empower participants to personalize their pieces. The process combines the joy of collage with the tactile satisfaction of working with clay. In our research of other decal classes, we found that the best workshops emphasize accessibility and imagination. For example, a London‑based class highlights that no drawing skills are required and encourages students to unleash their imaginations by layering unlimited decal pieces.
Another workshop notes that working with transfers enables detailed imagery to be easily transferred onto ceramic plates or bowls, providing a unique and personalized touch to the finished work. Classes often start with an introduction to the medium, followed by hands‑on application and finishing. At Limba, we build on these best practices but tailor the experience to our community.
